The term "Hung" refers to the number of operable sashes a window includes. A single-hung window has two sashes. However, only one (typically, the bottom sash) is operable. The top sash is stationary.

From a distance a double hung window will look the same as a single-hung window. The difference between the two is the double-hung window has both an upper and lower operational sash.
